Hi, I’m Dr. Adam Basner and I’m a board-certified plastic surgeon in Baltimore, Maryland. Many patients want to know will their upper eyelid surgery be covered by insurance if they have excess skin blocking their vision. If you have excess skin and you get a visual field test by your eye doctor which shows that your vision’s being blocked, yes, some or all of it can be covered by your insurance. Your insurance company’s concerned with your vision and they do cover the removal of the excess skin. Typically, when plastic surgeons do a cosmetic eye surgery, they also treat the underlying muscle and the fatty layer. So, for many of my patients, while we may have insurance cover about half of it, they elect to have the other half paid for out-of-pocket to get all the cosmetic benefits of the procedure at the same time.
