What Are Dermal Fillers?
Most of the dermal fillers Dr. Basner offers are made of a hyaluronic acid gel designed to restore volume to the skin. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that plays an important role in the skin's volume and suppleness. Since it is found naturally in the skin, HA fillers do not require allergy testing, and results are instant.
Dr. Basner also offers Sculptra, which is a collagen building filler made from poly-L-lactic acid. Sculptra stimulates collagen production in the skin, and while full results take longer to appear than with hyaluronic acid fillers, they tend to be longer lasting.
Dr. Basner offers the following dermal fillers in his Baltimore office:
- Restylane
- Restylane Silk
- Sculptra
- Juvederm Ultra Plus and Ultra Plus XC
- Voluma
- Volbella
- Vollure
During your consultation, Dr. Basner will listen to your concerns and help you choose the dermal filler to best achieve your goals. Each filler is slightly different, and one may be better than another for a specific concern. For instance, Voluma is wonderful for creating high cheekbones and lifting the mid face due to its thick texture, but Restylane Silk or Volbella may be better for the delicate under eye area due to their more fluid nature.
What Can Dermal Fillers Treat?
Dermal fillers can be used in a variety of ways. Some of the most common uses include:
- Filling sunken temples or cheeks
- Lip augmentation
- Cheek or chin augmentation
- Reducing marionette lines and nasolabial folds
- Reducing lip lines
- Correcting under eye circles
- Non surgical nose job
Fillers are often combined with other procedures, such as Ultherapy skin tightening or BOTOX® Cosmetic. They can also be combined with surgical procedures such as a facelift or neck lift.
Who Is a Candidate for Dermal Fillers?
Men and women of all ages can benefit from a dermal filler treatment. Younger women tend to ask for fillers in order to achieve plumper lips or higher cheekbones, while older women want to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles as well as restore youthful volume.
Men may benefit from non-surgical chin augmentation, and fillers can also be used to help create the appearance of a stronger jawline. In addition, a skilled plastic surgeon can reduce men's lines, wrinkles, and hollows in a very natural and masculine manner.
Dermal fillers have very little risk when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, and they require no recovery time, making them an attractive option for many people. Talk to Dr. Basner to see if you are a good candidate.
How Long Do Fillers Last?
Dermal fillers can last anywhere from six months to two years or more, depending on:
- Individual metabolism
- Placement of filler
- Type of filler
Thicker fillers placed deeper in the skin, such as Voluma, tend to last longer than more superficial fillers. However, you do not need to wait for a filler to completely dissolve before touching it up. You also do not have to worry about sudden "deflation" when a filler dissolves; it happens very gradually.
Dermal Filler Side Effects
There are very few side effects associated with dermal fillers. The most common are slight bruising and swelling. Some areas, such as the lips, swell more than other areas. Bruising, if it occurs, can be easily treated with arnica and ice, and tends to dissipate in just a few days. Most bruising can be covered with makeup.
Serious side effects are extremely rare, and can be avoided by simply visiting an experienced injector. Dr. Basner has never seen a serious complication from a dermal filler injection.
